How can I do my bit?

The aims of the LTP can't be fully achieved just by implementing its transport schemes. Much depends on how people make their travel decisions. Since transport is a derived demand – i.e. it arises from the activities we undertake – we all have a part to play in achieving the aims of the Plan. It's all about us giving time to think about travel planning.

So here is what you can do before making a journey:

  • Decide if the journey is really necessary. Could you achieve what you want by other means eg. use of electronic communication?

  • Could the journey be shorter – i.e. to a local facility? We are all tending to make longer and longer journeys in search of choice. Try to balance the desire for choice with the need to save resources.

  • Could you make this journey by public transport , bicycle or on foot ? These are all means of transport which can reduce the traffic volumes on our road system which may cut journey times and over short distances.

  • If a car is the only practicable means of making the journey, could you car-share with someone else? This particularly applies to journeys to work. Car-sharing can reduce demand on road space and help where the quantity of workplace parking is limited.

  • Ensure your car runs as efficiently as possible, by servicing it and checking tyre pressures regularly, reducing speed wherever possible, driving smoothly using gears efficiently, and planning your journey before you set off, to avoid unnecessary mileage.
